I Was Offered a W-2 — Benefits and All. I Said No. Here's Why.

Last week, a client I genuinely enjoy working with offered me a full-time W-2 position. A steady paycheck. Benefits. Paid holidays. The whole package. Sounds like a dream, right? I spent a week mulling it over before politely saying, "Thanks, but no thanks." About

Howdy, I’m Jan.

I’m a Southern gal in tech pursuing FIRE because, dagnabbit, time is priceless — but I also ain’t about to wait until retirement to spend it. I’m building a path to Japan while still making room for good food, new adventures, questionable side quests, and all the little things that make the journey worth taking.

So stick around, and you’ll find me experimenting in the kitchen, garden, and home bar, searching for akiya properties I probably shouldn’t buy, collecting treasures for my love of nesting, and sharing any books, games, music, and TV shows that catch my attention.

Some weeks, you’ll find me researching quirky made-in-Japan products. Other weeks, I might be growing something in the garden, testing a viral recipe, reorganizing my entire house for absolutely no reason but the season, or convincing myself that I dont need to treat hobbies like Pokémon; I can’t catch ‘em all.

Southern Sakura is where I document all of it — the Ws, the Ls, the detours, the lessons, and the more-than-occasional “well, that seemed like a good idea at the time” moments.

Ready? Okay, let's go.
